Gayatri Mantra - History
History
The Gayatri Mantra has been chronicled in the Rig Veda, which was written in Sanskrit about 6000 years ago. Seems like many centuries before the mantra may have been chanted. This mantra- Rig Veda Samhita was composed by sage Vishwamitra. He composed most of the poems in the third section of the Rig Veda.
The word "Gayatri" itself explains the reason for the existence of this mantra. It has its origin in the Sanskrit phrase Gayandam Triyate iti, which rescues the chanter from all adverse situations that may lead to mortality. The Gayatri mantra is composed of a metre consisting of 24 syllabes- generally arranged in a triplet of eight syllables each. Therefore, this particular meter (tripadhi) is also known as the Gayatri meter or "Gayatri Chhanda".

BHARGO DEVASYA DHEEMAHI
DHIYO YONAHA PRACHODAYAT"
Meaning of Mantra
"we meditate on that most adorable, desirable and enchanting luster and brilliance of our Supreme Being, our Source Energy, our collective consciousness....who is our creator, inspirer and source of eternal Joy. May this warm and loving Light inspire and guide our mind & open our hearts".
Chanting of the Gayatri Mantra
Today, it is chanted, meditated to, and sung around the world with reverence and love. Therefore, it is often compared to The Lord's Prayer in significance and impact. The ideal time for chanting the mantra is three times a day- at dawn, mid day, and at dusk. These times are known as the three sandhyas- morning, mid day and evening. The maximum benefit of chanting the mantra is said to be obtained by chanting it 108 times. However, one may chant it 3, 9, or 18 times when pressed for time.
"Gayatri Mantra", is also known as "Guru Mantra", or the "Savitri Mantra". This mantra is often referred to as "the mother of the Vedas". Gayatri, the five-faced Goddess, is said to have domain over the five senses or Pranas, and protects these five life-forces of those who chant the Gayatri Mantra.
